What is MetaTrader 5?
MetaTrader 5 is a trading platform developed by MetaQuotes and licensed to brokers, who issue accounts on it. That relationship is the important structural fact: you generally don't have an MT5 account so much as a broker account accessed through MT5. It runs as a desktop terminal, with mobile apps and a browser-based web terminal alongside.
What it provides: charting with built-in indicators and objects, a symbol Market Watch populated by your broker, order entry and position management, account history and reports, and a Depth of Market window where the broker publishes depth. Its distinguishing layer is MQL5 — a programming language with its own editor, used to write indicators, scripts and Expert Advisors, which are automated strategies that run inside the terminal and can place and manage orders on the connected account. What is TradingView?
TradingView is a charting and market-analysis platform built browser-first, with desktop and mobile apps alongside. Charting is the product rather than a feature of something else, which shows in the depth of the drawing tools, the breadth of instruments and the amount of attention paid to the analysis workflow.
Its distinguishing layers are Pine Script — a scripting language with a very large public library of community-published indicators and strategies — and the social ecosystem: published ideas, followed authors and discussion attached to instruments. Alerts run server-side, so they fire whether or not you have the tab open. Trading is supported through integrated brokers, with a trading panel on the chart; which brokers are available depends on your region and TradingView's current integration list. This is where most comparisons get lazy, so to be precise: MetaTrader 5's charting is genuinely capable, and a very large number of people trade successfully on nothing else. It has indicators, a full object set, templates for chart styling and profiles that save whole workspace arrangements — the last of which is better than what most browser platforms offer.
What TradingView offers instead is a charting environment that was designed as the destination rather than as part of a terminal. In practice that tends to mean a more fluid drawing and annotation workflow, broader instrument coverage for cross-market comparison, and the fact that your charts and levels are tied to an account rather than to one machine's installation. Traders who work across many instruments, or who move between computers, usually feel that difference most.
Neither answer is universal. If your charting is a handful of instruments with a few indicators, MT5 does that and the second platform is overhead. If you maintain a large body of levels across many markets, a dedicated charting environment earns its place.

MetaTrader 5
A solid built-in set of indicators and objects, extended through MQL5 — either code you write in MetaEditor or products from the MQL5 Market. Custom indicators compile and run locally, which means they can do essentially anything MQL5 can, including reading account state.
TradingView
A deep built-in set plus a very large public library of Pine Script indicators, most of it free to use and readable. Scripts run on TradingView's side, which is why sharing and forking someone else's indicator is a two-click operation rather than a compile step.
The practical distinction: MQL5 is a general-purpose language embedded in a terminal, and Pine Script is a charting language with a distribution network. If you want an indicator that also manages positions, MQL5 is the environment for it. If you want to find, read and adapt what a thousand other people have already written, Pine Script's library is the strongest asset either platform has.
Alerts are worth calling out separately, because the architectures differ in a way that matters day-to-day. MT5's alerts run in the terminal, so the terminal has to be running. TradingView's run on its servers, so they fire with your machine off. If you set levels and walk away, that's not a small difference.

This is the clearest structural difference between them, and also the one most often overstated.
MetaTrader 5 is designed around the broker relationship. The account is issued on it, the terminal is the client for that account, and order entry, position management and account state are native to the platform rather than an integration. TradingView does execute trades — it provides a trading panel that places and manages orders from the chart when a supported broker is connected. The caveat is not that execution is absent but that it is conditional: it depends on your broker being on TradingView's integration list, and that list varies by region. For a trader whose broker is supported, the workflow is direct. For one whose broker isn't, execution has to happen elsewhere regardless of how good the charts are.

Both platforms automate; they automate at different points in the chain, and the difference is architectural rather than a matter of one being more capable.
- MetaTrader 5. An Expert Advisor is compiled MQL5 running inside the terminal, with direct access to the connected account. It can place, modify and close orders itself, run unattended, and be evaluated in the Strategy Tester beforehand. The trade-off is that the terminal has to be running — which is why traders who automate commonly host MT5 on a VPS.
- TradingView. Pine Script strategies and alerts are evaluated on TradingView's servers. Turning a signal into a live order generally goes through a connected broker integration, or through routing alerts to an external service that places the order. It's a signal-generation layer with execution attached, rather than execution logic living on the account.
If self-contained strategy logic operating directly on a broker account is the requirement, MT5's model is the more direct fit and has a large ecosystem built around it. If the automation you want is "notify me, reliably, when this condition occurs", TradingView's server-side alerting is the simpler path. Neither is the general-purpose answer.

Order-flow capability depends far more on the underlying data than on the platform badge, and this is the row of the comparison where confident claims age fastest.
On MetaTrader 5, a Depth of Market window is built in, though the depth actually available is whatever your broker publishes — for many retail FX accounts, that is limited or absent. The general point applies to both, and to every other platform: order-flow analysis is only as good as the data underneath it. Market data: MT5 vs TradingView
Market data is the most common source of surprise when traders switch platforms, and it deserves more attention than a feature table row.
- On MetaTrader 5, your data is your broker's data. Symbols, spreads, quotes and history all come from the broker whose account you're on. Two brokers' MT5 terminals can show meaningfully different prices, symbol names and history depth on the same instrument. The upside is that the prices you analyse are the prices you'll be filled against.
- On TradingView, data comes from exchanges and data providers, with wide coverage across markets. Some real-time feeds require paid exchange subscriptions on top of the platform plan, and delayed data is common until you take one. Which instruments are real-time for you depends on what you've subscribed to.
Before committing to either, verify the specific instrument you trade, on the specific account you'll use, at the granularity you need. This is worth ten minutes: a platform that charts your market beautifully on delayed data, or on a feed that isn't your broker's, is a different tool than it looks like.
Replay, paper trading and trade review
MetaTrader 5's rehearsal tooling is centred on the Strategy Tester, whose visual mode plays historical data forward — built primarily for evaluating Expert Advisors rather than for discretionary practice. For simulated trading, the usual route is a broker demo account. For review, MT5 keeps account history and exports reports.
TradingView provides bar replay and a built-in paper trading account, both aimed squarely at discretionary practice. Journaling isn't a focus on either platform; most traders who keep one use a separate tool.
The gap both share is continuity — the analysis, the practice, the order and the review tend to live in different places, which is why the record so often stops being maintained. MT5 vs TradingView for Forex
For retail forex and CFDs, the decision is usually made for you by where your account is.
